Analyis of the race

A fair contest, run at a good pace, which allowed FIRST DE LA BRUNIE's stamina to come into play down the home straight. The gelding had rather lost his way since winning a couple of chases on soft ground early in 2006 and had been pulled up when tried in a point last year. Recent efforts over fences and hurdles had not hinted at an imminent return to winning ways, but this strongly-run race clearly suited him well and he wore down Double Mead on the run-in.

Double Mead, who escaped a penalty for her win in a conditional jockeys' race at Market Rasen 11 days earlier, looked all over the winner when taking it up turning for home, but had no answer to the winner's late burst. This was still a good effort from the mare and she should continue to hold her own in this grade.
