It was expected to be significantly softer than for either of his wins in the spring, or for his recent success at Market Rasen, an 11lb hike for which made him theoretically 4lb well in here with his penalty. However, it was not as soft as had been forecast, and rider David England, who took off a handy 3lb by virtue of the fact that he was riding for his own stable, did not go off too hard in front, which meant there was something left when the six-year-old was headed briefly running down the hill towards the home straight. Back in front before three out, Rowdy Yeats proved very determined in front, although he was helped by the fact that none of his main rivals could be regarded as the most tenacious in the business. He is due a short break and might go over a bit further on his return.
Vibe got into contention at the top of the hill, with three to jump, but he did not look the most genuine under pressure.
Golly is on a long losing run, but on paper, at least, he ran respectably in fourth.
Jupon Vert headed the winner briefly, but he is hard to win with at the best of times and had not run for 143 days.
