It paid to stay up with the pace and STRATEGIC MISSION was given the perfect ride in the underfoot conditions. Absent since the middle of July, he had plenty of decent form to make his mark in this sort of company. His last run at Newmarket was in a maiden that could not have worked out any better - every horse that finished in front of him and has raced since has won at least one race. Indeed, he did not have everything in his favour that day and could have finished a bit closer to Rio De La Plata with a bit more luck. This is probably mission accomplished for this season now and he should be one to follow next year.
Saleima was unfancied on her debut but ran fairly well on quick ground - Queen Of Naples, who finished one place in front of her, was thought good enough to take her place in the Prix Marcel Boussac last weekend. An Irish Oaks entrant, she was settled in midfield early before being produced about 2f from home. She did well to close the gap considering the ease in the ground and should have little trouble winning a maiden, especially if found one against her own sex.
The Sangster family has enjoyed plenty of luck with offspring from the mare Magnificient Style, as she has produced Percussionist, Playful Act, Echoes In Eternity and Distinctive Look. Quite a late foal, Changing Skies is a sister to the first two in that illustrious list and she must have pleased connections with a sound first effort. Much like the runner-up, she should be placed to do better next time.
Monashee Rock would not have enjoyed the way the race was run and will be better suited by a stronger gallop. She could be the sort for a race on the all-weather whereshe should get a decent pace to chase.
Red Twist is a half-brother to a couple of very useful sorts, especially Necklace, who won the Moyglare Stud Stakes as a 2yo before holding her own in top-class company as a 3yo. He was green to post and shaped well in the circumstances. The experience alone will have done him good.
The other newcomer to show obvious promise was Contrada. A 160,000gns half-brother to a couple of fair performers, he was slowly away and going nowhere quickly at the halfway point. However, he stayed on quite well when getting the hang of things and suggested races will be won with him.
Jamie Poulton reported that Rettorical Lad had a breathing problem. (DT)
