The first division of a maiden run over a relatively new distance for the course, and the Godolphin debutant FATEH FIELD caught the attention with a smart winning effort. A $500,000 Derby entrant, he has a fair bit of speed in his pedigree and that showed as he sprinted clear off the slow pace inside the final furlong, after travelling strongly towards the far side. Many of the Godolphin juveniles have needed their initial outing this term, including Rio De La Plata, but Fateh Field was an exception and looks well worth his place in Pattern company now.
Thannaan, who ran well following a slow startwhen fourth over course and distance on debut, ahead of Bombardier Wells, had slower ground to contend with here and he simply found the winner too pacey. The way he was keeping on in second suggests he will be suited by 7f and a standard maiden should come his way.
Brazilian Brush comes from a yard whose juveniles often improve for a run and he started to get outpaced from over 3f out. It was pleasing to see him come home strongly and a truer-run race at this distance should see him in a better light.
Fly In Johnny, always outpaced following a sluggish start on debut at Windsor, was tackling an extra half-furlong here and showed plenty of early pace, but was left for dead when the winner kicked for home and may be more of a nursery type.
Annes Rocket, who could make no impact following a slow start for Kevin Prendergast at Tipperary on his debut in May, was returning from a lengthy absence, but shaped most promisingly, outperforming his 80/1 odds, and will be qualified for nurseriesfollowing another outing.
Carmela Maria hails from a yard whose juveniles often benefit from a run and as a result this can go down as a reasonable effort.
Trumpet Lily, although by speedy first-season sire Acclamation, shaped as though in need of further when fourth over 7f at Kempton last time and shewas unable to make much of an impact. Now qualified for nurseries, she can be expected to fare better in that sphere.
Bombardier Wells, although behind Thannaan on debut, shaped with plenty of promise there following a sluggish start and it was interesting that connections were seemingly happy to reoppose. He failed to race on with the principals, though, having not been far off the gallop early, and proved quite disappointing.
The stewards enquired into the running and riding of Bainsteoir, who had run on to finish sixth. They interviewed the rider, who stated his instructions were to drop the gelding in and get some cover, and then to finish as close as possible, He added that he had been able to carry out the instructions and that he asked the horse for an effort after switching left for a run a furlong out. He further stated that in his view the gelding needed further than this trip and had run on through beaten horses inside the closing stages. Having viewed the video recording of the race, and having also heard evidence from the handicapper, the stewards noted these explanations and took no further action. (MB)
