CHANTACO, winner of the best-turned-out award, was one of those who wouldn't have been first on many punters' lists, but he was undeniably well handicapped after a few disapppointing efforts.
He raced in first or second throughout and kept on gamely off top weight to repel allcomers - there were certainly plenty in with a chance 2f out.
This was the lowest mark last year's Zetland Gold Cup winner had raced off since 2005, and the handicapper will bung him up a few pounds for this.
Forroger was back from a break, having disappointed over this trip at Epsom on Oaks day, but he had won following a longer absence than this before, so fitness shouldn't have been a big concern. It wasn't, but he perhaps didn't pick up as well as he looked poised to at one point - he travelled best 3f out - and so ought to improve a shade for this.
In winning on her handicap bow by three and a half lengths, at Windsor nine days earlier, on good to soft over this trip, Shela House had suggested she would be well up to shouldering a 4lb penalty (due to go up a further 2lb for future races).
Shogun Prince ran well considering it was his first start for over a year. He'll improve for it and is worth watching next time.
New Star has run his best two races at Chester, so it is a pity there is no more racing there until next spring, as he ran well here.
Master Pegasus is sure to come good again soon - only win on soft - while Folio, runner-up in this 12 months earlier, hadthe beating of Aegean Prince (first-time blinkers) on soft-ground Haydock form of 12 days earlier, and was off a 5lb lower mark than he's won off in the past year.
However, Folio was most disappointing and Aegean Prince was never better than his finishing position.
Easing of the ground promised to make this trip suitable for Le Soleil (three of four wins over 1m4f), but the winning time was quicker than the preceding maiden and things happened a little too quickly for him.
Celtic Change came into this in cracking form (winning form on good to soft), but was trying 1m2f for the first time, and it did not work out.
