New tactics were adopted on the winner, who had not progressed since her debut second to the smart Promising Lead at Newbury in the spring, and they may have done the trick, for once Oscar Urbina had her in front she never really looked like being caught, although her market rivals were poised behind her approaching the straight. Ballad Maker had been shaken off before the furlong pole, and although Multakka looked for a moment as if he might get to her going into the final furlong, he was always being held through the last 100 yards. This will have done wonders for her broodmare value.
Multakka was best in on official ratings, but he had hinted at being ungenuine last year, and judging from his head carriage, he remains a little suspect, despite the subsequent geldingoperation. That said, there are easy pickings in maidens at this time of year and he can not be ruled out.
Thea Di Bisanzio was the only other meriting consideration as a potential winner. She raced handily, too, but was the first of the four principals beaten. She, too, will have more opportunities when she has had her third run for a mark.
