Ferneley tracked leaders in 4th, not clear run straight, 6th when switched right under 1f out, ridden and kept on well close home

Cougar Bay close 2nd, ridden to lead entering straight, headed over 1f out, soon no extra

Brave Tin Soldier tracked leaders in 3rd, ridden to challenge entering straight, weakened from 1 1/2f out

A first success at Pattern level for HEARTHSTEAD MAISON, dropping back to the trip at which he gained his two handicap wins at Newmarket. He had to be driven along around three furlongs out, but like so many of his stablemates over the years he does not lack determination and he kept on well after getting to the front over a furlong out. It looked as if he failed to stay when tried over 1m4f in the Great Voltigeur, and having flopped badly over 2m in the Queen's Vase, it seems fair to assume that this distance is close to his optimum.

Arch Rebel, who recorded two of his three Listed wins last season at this venue, has gone through this season without managing to add to his tally but had shown signs of a return to peak form with his third placing in a Group 3 over two furlongs further here last month. Held up at the rear of the field, he was still at the back on the approach to the straight before staying on with a sustained run. This was a livelier performance than his fourth in the corresponding race last season, and especially praiseworthy considering that his best form has come with plenty of ease in the ground.

Regime, who had run with credit in two Group 2 races in France since contesting the Derby, was also held up but failed to quicken appreciably having begun to wind up his effort before Arch Rebel's challenge started to gain momentum. It looked a rather flat effort from a horse with smart form at Pattern level.

Cougar Bay, second in this event 12 months ago, has rarely run a bad race despite being a hard horse to win with. However, he had a bit of on off-day here, fading from over a furlong out after a spell in the lead.

Brave Tin Soldier, a Listed winner at two, had not run since contesting the Poule d'Essai des Poulains on his seasonal debut. He dropped away when the heat was turned on after showing up prominently, and though it is quite possible that he will come on from the run, he remains a difficult horse to assess.

Flamingo Guitar was out of her depth in this company, but the Irish 1,000 Guineas fifth Truly Mine failed to do justice to her ability and was eased to finish detached. [AS]
