Freetown won the final of this race back in 2002 and made a bold bid for a winning reappearance, kicking on a fair way out, but he started to hang right going to the last, carrying MATERIAL WORLD with him, and when she was switched for her effort he found her just too strong.
The winner was also making her reappearance, and this was a cracking effort off a mark 15lb higher than for last season's Wincanton win and another 8lb higher than for her excellent second to Refinement at Aintree. She has never taken much racing but she does her small stable proud and this was her fifth win from 15 starts. She has only once been out of the frame.
The first two were clear of Valley Ride, who nevertheless shaped much better this time, and Refinement, who made hardish work of getting on to the heels of the leaders off this 14lb higher mark and weakened on the flat to be beaten a fair wayinto fourth.
Totally Scottish had a tough task from so far out of the handicap, while the nicely treated Mistanoora stayed on to run better than he had at done at Haydock, without quite fulfilling Kempton promise.
Carlys Quest ran his typical race, passing horses after horse when the race was over after trailing the field for much of the way.
