Even by the standards of a seller this was abysmal with there being almost nothing positive to say about the participants. It was, though, quite dramatic, in that it turned into a race of changing fortunes with Purr sweeping into the lead on the run to the final bend, only to be grabbed in turn by NEEDWOOD SPIRIT. The 11-year-old, who was carrying 3lb overweight, had not won for over four years but had still been in touch when unseating at Leicester 16 days prior to this victory. He made a big move to gain what at one stage looked an unlikely victory but it's still hard to see him following up.

Front-runner Champagne Rossini invariably pulls hard and he again raced freely, doing well to hang on for third. Ray Mond pulled even harder but he too retained enough energy to finish fourth.

Trackattack comes from a stable in form but he was beaten before halfway.
