An ordinary juvenile event in which the early pace was decidedly steady. That did not help HEATHCOTE, who took quite a grip and would not settle, and there were still four in with a chance jumping the final flight. The winner stayed on strongly up the hill, though, and even had Mac Federal stayed on his feet it is unlikely that he would have denied him. This was a fair effort under his penalty and connections now plan to run him in the Fred Winter at the Festival.
Mac Federal jumped the second-last just in front and was disputing the lead when crashing out at the last, but he just looked to be coming to the end of his tether at the time. He ran quite well on testing ground on the Flat in Italy and these conditions seemed to suit him.
Avalon was pretty weak in the betting beforehand and ran no more than a modest race back in third. On the plus side, he is now eligible for a handicap mark, and perhaps he will spring into life in that sphere. Jubilee Dream, fit from the Flat where he proved only modest, was well held in fourth on his hurdling debut.
