CALVIC had looked to be up against it when ridden and some way off the pace six out, but his stamina came into play in the latter stages and he stayed on well under pressure to lead close home despite a mistake at the last fence. A fair novice last season, he has gradually been running into form this term and is worth bearing in mind off a low weight in next month's Midlands National - the longer trip will suit him well, and he will be seen to better advantage on the softer ground likely to prevail at Uttoxeter.
Precious Bane is another mudlark who ran well on ground less soft than ideal, making much of the running and rallying to get back into contention two out, only to be caught close home. He showed he stayed this trip and he remains on the upgrade.
Chabrimal Minster ran well for a long way and looked set to take all the beating when he led three out, but he did not find as much as he had appeared likely to in front, went left and was headed at the last fence and was run out of the places on the run-in - he does not look an out-and-out stayer on this evidence.
Sir Frosty has still to find his form this season, only keeping on late for a respectable fifth here. The rest were well held, though Admiral Peary may not have stayed.
