HAILE SELASSIE jumped soundly and took advantage of his rivals' shortcomings, left in the lead two out and holding on well. For all that this was a modest contest, he could be worth keeping on the right side next time as he should improve for this firstrun over fences, and first for 477 days.
But he would have had to work much harder for victory here but for two departures two out. Donovan had led from five out and still looked to have plenty left when he came down - first-time blinkers seemed to have helped him, but he has still to match his hurdling form over fences and obviously has to brush up his jumping.
Brooklyn's Gold took advantage of the falls to take second place, keeping on after being ridden some way out, but is another who is yet to match his hurdling exploits as a chaser - a remark which also applies tothird placed Italiano.
Arctic Cherry raced keenly in front for much of the way, but paid the price in the latter stages - he will always be seen to best advantage when presented with a test of speed.
