Parish Oak looked on a fairly stiff mark beforehand but he ran well in defeat, forcing the favourite to pull out all the stops.
Even more surprising was the performance of Lord Gunnerslake, who had not shown anything recently, albeit in much better company on the last two occasions, to suggest he could play a major part here.
Afro Man was still going well enough, although there was a long way to go, when taking a clumsy fall on the far side. A confidence-booster back over hurdles might be required now.
The vet reported that Life Begins bled from the nose.
Looking Forward was last seen on a racecourse in April 2004 so one could forgive him for needing this reappearance outing. He got loose beforehand, too, but was allowed to take his chance, and he was in the process of running a blinder when all but falling at the first in the home straight and losing his rider. He is currently on the same mark as when last successful, and he will deserve respect in similar company next time.
