A big field for this staying handicap, and they were taken along at a good gallop by the veteran top-weight Fin Bec, who did not give way until after jumping the second last.

At that point the new leader Thedreamstillalive looked sure to win, as he had jumped and travelled well on this chasing debut. However, he seemed to run out of stamina after the last and succumbed to the renewed challenge of MONGER LANE.

The mare is better known as a hurdler, but won on her chasing debut two years ago and showed plenty of determination to prevail. She is currently rated 27lb lower over fences than over hurdles, and will clearly remain well handicapped, even after re-assessment.

Boardroom Dancer was unable to dominate this time with Fin Bec in the field and that probably contributed to a slightly disappointing effort.

That remark also applies to the favourite Bay Island, who was held up off the pace, and despite an error at the last on the far side was close enough early in the straight, before fading.

Jack Fuller travelled well in the pack in the re-applied visor, but failed to pick up in the straight and may have found the ground too soft for him.
