He ultimately had to buckle down to subdue Grasp but travelled well through the race and can progress from thisfirst British outing without making strong appeal for Cheltenham, where better ground will be a new test for him, although it may well suit.
Grasp, who had shown himself a thorough stayer on the Flat in the autumn albeit at a lowly level, proved his debut form on much faster ground to be all wrong. He had worn a visor on the Flat and the addition of blinkers here from his hurdling debut obviously helped. After the early leaders tired early on the last circuit, he picked up the baton and jumped well toput the squeeze on all bar the classy winner. He should soon be winning under similar conditions and should stay further.
Shamayoun was expected to make a bold show, but while he went clear with the other three at the end of the back straight, he was soon dropped and struggled home on the ground. This French import still showed enough and may benefit from better ground.
