NINE DE SIVOLA, who has never stopped improving this season and whose young rider took off a handy 7lb, came from off the pace to follow up his recent Wetherby and Catterick novice wins, and there is almost certainly more to come from the ex-French horse, who clearly goes well in the mud but also has winning form on good ground.
His Nibs wasalways close to the pace, and this was just the encouragement his connections needed after he had finished tailed off on Boxing Day on his first outing in 11 months. He had been a decent performer two years ago, and this effort suggests he is now coming to hand again.
Korelo, who looked to have a fair bit to do at the weights in conditions that did not make things easy for top-weights, was taken wide for much of the trip in search of better ground, and in the circumstances ran a cracking race in third, having looked held on the home turn before finishing strongly. He ran well in three staying races at Cheltenham last season, and this effort suggests he could well be back there in March turning in a bold effort in the final of this series.
Valley Ride, raised 6lb for his win over three miles on good ground at Bangor last month, seemed to find this extra furlong on much slower going beyond him, while the final furlong also possibly found out Hasty Prince. The latter has done all his winning at up to 2m4f and, very patiently-ridden here, he came there to have his chance turning for home but could not sustain his challenge in the closing stages.
Chives, having his first hurdle run since 2000, was never far away but had run his race by three out, while Be My Royal, another very useful chaser on his day but here making his comeback after a 10-month break, travelled well until he too started to run out of steam with half-a-mile to run.
Naos de Mirande, twice a winner over 2m1f in France last year, travelled like a winner approaching the home turn, but this big step up in trip presumably found him out as he fell to nothing in the straight.
