Analyis of the race

There are high hopes that ALFRED THE GREAT will be going on to better things as he made it two out of two in decisive fashion. He was left in front when the hard-pulling Kiwijimbo fell three out, and, driven along, he stayed on well. He jumped much better than when winning at Sandown where his connections had expected him to score in rather better fashion. His rider felt he could be ‘another King Revo' and there is certainly improvement to come. He was cut from 40-1 to 33-1 with Hills for the Triumph Hurdle.

Lysander, a multiple winner on the Flat at around ten furlongs in Germany, made up a lot of ground in the closing stages to be a clear second best. He clearly has ability and there is improvement in him, probably over further.

Maneki Neko (100-1), twice a winner on the Flat when with Mark Tompkins, improved a deal on his hurdling debut and was a clear third best, though no match for the first two.

Malt De Vergy looked as if he was going to get into it racing into the final bend, but he stopped quickly and something may have been amiss. The vet later reported Acropolis was lame in the left fore. Nicky Richards reported Le Chiffre finished distressed.
