A fine training performance by Peter Winkworth to ready JUST A TOUCH to win after nearly a year off, having been injured at Plumpton. Held up off the gallop, he made gradual headway into a promising position as they turned for home and outstayed Jupon Vert and Madison De Vonnas from two out. Expected to stay further by connections, the winner has gone well fresh in the past and this did not come as a total surprise, but he will need to improve if he is to defy a penalty.

Jupon Vert led or disputed it for a long way and got into a fine jumping rhythm, but he had no answer as the winner swooped. He gave his all in defeat, however, and stuck his neck out to hold Madison De Vonnas for second, but will remain vulnerable to anything less exposed.

Madison De Vonnas, a modest hurdler, made a highly pleasing start to his chasing career and harried Jupon Vert for the lead throughout, but his big weight took its toll and he was just run out of second. There are races in him over fences on this evidence.

Wages,shouldering a 7lb penalty for winning at Towcester last week, was let down by his jumping on this occasion, making several mistakes, and he never got into it. He is better than this, but needs to be more fluent.

Upswing came into the race after a good second at Musselburgh and was open to some improvement as this was only his third outing over fences. But, like the favourite, he could never get going and also made a few errors.
