A race always likely to take little winning and handicap newcomer GOLDEN FEATHER had little trouble disposing of a poor field. Disappointing in four starts for previous trainer Richard Guest, the combination of the switch to the Venetia Williams stable and move into handicaps off a lowly weight did the trick and he gradually came clear from the turn into the straight. Winning off a mark of 82 here, he may go to Musselburgh next week in a bid to follow up.

Northern Shadows, whose stable has an excellent record at this course, made good headway down the back straight to loom ominously in third, but she was unable to go in pursuit of the winner when asked and took her time in getting the better of Baron Blitzkrieg on the run-in. She has yet to win in 11 starts and shaped here as though worthy of a try at three miles.

These were clear of Darialann, who was unable to improve on his recent fourth at Market Rasen, and Astronaut, who left behind a disappointing effort at Sedgefield on Boxing Day.

Recent scorer Ask The Umpire faced a tough task under such a big weight and it was no surprise to see him struggle.
