An eventful race with CALATAGAN returning to winning form on his chasing bow despite having to overcome some mistakes. He had never been far off the pace but was being outjumped by the leader and looked destined for the second spot as his rival took the final fence with another good leap. He had appeared to hang in when his jockey asked him to go past but once straightened out on the run-in he found his stride to get up close home. He could do better on decent ground but this should have done his confidence the world of good.

Cossack Dancer had run well behind Hors La Loi III at Taunton in December and put in another sound effort. He was continually gaining ground at his fences with several prodigious leaps, after leading from the start, and looked to have sealed victory with another good jump at the last. He hung left in the closing stages when the winner came to tackle him but he certainly deserves to win a race like this.
