DEMPSEY took time getting his act together last season but looked a useful novice when winning over the course and distance. He's from a stable that's good at getting themready first time out, and although the easing of the ground was a slight worry (he is thought best on goodish ground and had been taken out at Lingfield a week previously) he shrugged off a nine-month absence under a positive ride, which saw him go to the front down the far side after racing keenly, and take command before the second last. He now goes to Cheltenham for the Victor Chandler Chase, and with a 4lb penalty he will still look well treated. However, there is a suspicion he is better right-handed and the stiff finish might not play to his strengths. He is now 7-1 from 20-1 with VCbet, but a more attractive 12-1 with William Hill.
Tikram was returning from a similar absence, having been operated on for a tumour on the back of his head. This trip is too sharp for him and he was being pushed along running to the third last, but he closed on the winner up the hill without quite looking as if he would get to him. A return to further will obviously help, although in the short term a rematch with Dempsey in the Victor Chandlers at Cheltenham is the likely option.
Lorient Express was 13lb higher than when gaining his third win of the season at Wincanton, and up in grade significantly too. He is another who probably prefers a sounder surface, and he was no danger from the third-last.
