The ex-French MAGNIFICO had a 14lb penalty for his two wins, but that was offset to some extent by the 7lb claim of a decent conditional and he might have been expected to win more easily, having gained his Enghein success in testing conditions. He had to work to get upsides long-time leader Stoop To Conquer going down the back, but although they both made mistakes at the second-last he came away from that flight with a three-length lead, which he never looked like giving up, even though he came under pressure rounding the home turn and needed keeping up to his work up the straight, where he raced against the stands' rail. Perhaps he didn't enjoy the ground after all - the desperately slow time is indicative of how bad it was - or perhaps he simply isn't all that good.
Nice Try lost touch with the principals three out, but they were going up and down in the same spot in the straight and he was closing at the finish.
