The runner-up tracked the winner from early on and turned in his best effort since winning from a 5lb lower mark here in October. But having looked, halfway up the straight, as if he would pick off the leader, he could not find the change of gear needed to win his race.
Screwdriver was possibly unlucky. Drawn on the wide side, he was dropped in and switched to the inside, but met trouble in running in the straight and got going too late to trouble the principals.
Atlantic Quest, having his first run since being claimed out of Karl Burke's yard, looked to have a stiff task at the weights (9lb higher than when winning this race a year ago) and was also racing from an unfavoured high draw, and he was in trouble before the home turn.
Martin Dwyer reported that Mr Lambros was hampered at the start, and Mickey Fenton reported that Outer Hebrides was also hampered early on.
