The winner had every chance on official figures, but was a difficult horse to assess, having been well-beaten on his return to action over 1m4f last month, that being his first outing since he ran sixth in the 2004 Italian Derby. He had been keen in the race here last month, so was given his head over this shorter distance, but set just a fair pace and that was critical on the run to the line.
Trifti, taking a big step up in class after winning a handicap off a mark of 78 here in November, excelled himself in second, but the handicapper is likely to exact a price after this fine secondto the 100-rated winner, with horses rated up to 102 behind him.
Appalachian Trail would have appreciated a more generous pace, and he was also disadvantaged by having to swing wide on the home turn to deliver his challenge. Having got himself into a challenging position a furlong out, he could find no more, but it would be no surprise to see him bounce back to winning ways in a more strongly-run event.
