CUMBRIAN KNIGHT had scored over 1m6f here in November, with Activist behind, and bounced back to form after a disappointing effort last month to score with a little bit in hand. His trainer Malcolm Jefferson explained that the horse had raced too close to a too strong pace last time, resulting in him dropping away in the straight.
Countback, a fair third here last month, finishing just behind runner-up Bank On Benny that day, reversed placings with Paul d'Arcy's runner, who was given too much to do on this occasion, but was readily outpointed by the winner and he remains a maiden at the age of seven.
Olivino was the gamble of the race, being backed down from big morning prices, even though he was taking a big step up in trip after recent runs over 1m2f. He settled well enough just off the pace and travelled nicely on the home turn, but he did not find a great deal off the bridle, edging left under the whip and lugging in behind Cumbrian Knight.
