PRINCIPAL WITNESS was perfectly placed and travelling strongly as they came down the hill towards the straight. A gap came on the rail just when it was needed and he took it up at the furlong pole. This was his first success at the 16th attempt, but he had made a promising debut for his new stable and he may well win again.
Robbie Can Can and Blackmail both came from off the pace, the former running on late when eased to the outside after being held up in last. Both did well considering the way the race was run.
Swainson made much of the running and had his chance. Dovedon Hero was dropped out as usual and, having looked for a moment as though he might play a big part in the finish, his effort petered out.
Bendarshaan looked interesting on his debut for Richard Hannon, as it appeared as though he might havebeen dropped an extra 10lb in the handicap by mistake, for it was only his third start since he won off 75 at Musselburgh for Mark Johnston and he was off 61 here, having run off 73 on his most recent start. Although not entirely reliable, he has loads of form in decent handicap company off much stiffer marks, but there was little obvious promise in his effort here, when having raced handily he was eased when beaten. He is reportedly to try hurdling soon.
